Making a difference every single day by empowering girl child with education

India Literacy Project, wishes all women a very “Safe & Happy Women’s Day”!

At ILP, we believe in translating wishes into reality, and as per the United Nations theme for this year’s international women’s day “DigitALL: Innovation and Technology for Gender Equality”, ILP has always been “a catalyst for girls education” in:

  • Skilling on Information and Communication Technology (ICT) aligned to state syllabus on #computer education
  • Cultivating a culture of digital education for improved learning outcomes
  • Training teachers in their professional development via digital learning

India Literacy Project implemented a unique model for empowering women educators for skilling girls in high schools through digital education & #career guidance in the Kasturba Gandhi Balika Vidyalaya (KGBV) in Jharkhand.

This is a one of its kind program under the Ministry of Human Resource Development for empowering adolescent girls from underserved ST & SC communities.

ILP has joined hands with the Jharkhand government to facilitate this program in two districts covering 9000 girl students.

This is the first and unique intervention by ILP with an all women team of 18 Technical Facilitators skilled in Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) and conversational English.

As part of the ICT project, we have exceeded 2,00,000 hours of learning and still going steady for the coming years.

The synergy with & shared vision of our CSR, NGO and government partners in respective states has shaped our mission of digital skilling for young girl students.

We extend our heartfelt thanks to all those who have made this possible, to unlock their potential and empower them to soar high!

At India Literacy Project, we believe in making a difference each day. Standing by the girl child and encouraging them is not a one-time decision, but a daily commitment.

Commitment is an act and not a word

And walking the talk, the Dell Technologies CSR Head, APJ, Archana Sahay met up with the Jharkhand Field Facilitators who have been implementing on ground the ICT program to skill the girl students of KGBV residential hostels from grade 8-10.

Archana, herself being from the state of Jharkhand could relate to the infrastructural and systemic issues with the #school system and the #economic challenges the state continues to grapple with. These continue to be road blockers despite the best intentions of Dell and India Literacy Project to make a meaningful impact.

Here is where the Jharkhand team earned appreciation and respect from dell team for their indomitable spirit in overcoming multiple challenges in reaching out to the remotest locations to ensure that the girl students of KGBV can not only dream big but are also empowered to work towards making their dreams a reality.

Archana also emphasized the importance of education with the facilitators and impressed upon how #education is a passport to better quality of life, sharing her own personal experience and how her parents stretched their resources and means to ensure she got the best education which helped her achieve her dreams while being a role model for others.

The Jharkhand Facilitators shared their field experiences and the challenges they face as majority of the students come from tribal backgrounds and from very impoverished communities.

Also, with most teachers being either on contract or employed as temporary teachers, there is a huge learning gap to fill. Language is another barrier as most students speak Santali, Mythili and other local dialects, and learning Hindi and English are therefore a major challenge.

The ILP-Dell project has addressed these limitations through the development of educational resources and is immensely grateful to dell for this enriching partnership. The ICT tools in Hindi, #careerguidance exposure and spoken English modules are enabling students to skill themselves appropriately.

The consistent support from Dell CSR team bears testimony of their focus on underserved students and increasing their access to a high-quality #education

Also, for the Jharkhand team, it was a wonderful experience as they got a broader exposure with their visit to rural and urban government schools of Karnataka.

Celebrating National Science Day

National Science Day is celebrated in India on February 28th each year to mark the discovery of the Raman effect by Indian Physicist Sir C. V. Raman on 28 February 1928.

India Literacy Project takes great pride in honoring India’s eminent scientists by developing scientific temper through science kits in government schools across Indian states.

Our methodology sparks curiosity and interest in students towards science in everyday life.

The science labs provide a space for children to observe, understand, experiment, and discuss various aspects of science and the things around them.

The science kit covers:

  • 200+ chemistry, physics, and biology concepts
  • Everyday items along with a few specialized components
  • A detailed manual containing items required and setup and concepts
  • Experiment videos, manuals, and a structured training program
  • The science kit is aligned with NCERT curriculum from grades 5 10.

Children can touch, feel and build without fear of breaking expensive items.

A big thank you to Kennametal for sponsoring science kits in 137 government high schools in haveri district covering 25,000 students.

Also, 125 teachers were trained in effective usage of science kits to engage students.

As part of National Science Day celebrations, India Literacy Project has also been conducting science fairs and science experiments across various government schools in multiple Indian states.

For students, feedback at times is more important than just teaching

To ensure, a continuous feedback loop, India literacy project along with its NGO partners conducts systematic Learning Level Assessments (LLA) for students from grade 5-10 in accordance with NCERT norms.

Conducting LLA helps eradicate the learning gaps, elevate the confidence level and reduce student dropout rates.

India Literacy Project’s pioneering program Multi-Dimensional Learning Spaces (MDLS) ensures students learn via experiential methodology, thereby improving their LLA scores as students comprehend and retain the syllabus better.

LLA is conducted during the start and end of the academic year in all the mediums of instruction based on the local state language.

Before going ahead with LLA, India Literacy Project team along with its NGO partners, meet-up with senior teachers and state level Education Department teams for inputs.

February 14 is celebrated as library lovers’ day each year to honor libraries, librarians, book lovers, and lovers of libraries

India Literacy Project truly believes in inculcating reading habit in students right from a young age.

For reading expands minds, enriches lives, shapes dreams, and opens doors to infinite possibilities.

Throughout the year, India Literacy Project works with various NGO partners, local government authorities and CSR partners to open child friendly libraries in schools and villages across various Indian states.

Not just opening libraries but India Literacy Project also conducts reading level assessments via grow by reading methodology wherein books are color coded using six colors, green to yellow (GROW BY- green, red, orange, white, blue, yellow).

Children are first assessed on their reading levels and mapped to one of the colors. The children are then encouraged to pick books from their level.

Through child friendly books and a structured framework and monitoring process, library programs bring the joy of reading to the classroom and help improve reading in native and English language.
